Target audience: Y5 teachers, KS2 and assessment leads in primary schools

These sessions will guide individual teacher’s assessment judgements and support in-school and between school moderation.
Rather than being a practical moderation session, this will be CPD focusing on the key aspects of writing to secure for pupils in Y5. We will consider what is important, how to recognise it, and approaches that support improvement.
In advance of the session, teachers are asked to scan writing samples for two pupils – preferably one child they assess as working at the expected standard for Y5, and one working above that level (alternatively two within the expected standard). The samples should be two (or three at most) complete independent pieces for each pupil – one a story/fiction and one something non-fiction eg. non-chronological report, recount or persuasive piece. These should be available on the teacher’s device, to be shared in breakout rooms and the main session as appropriate. Teachers should have the rest of those pupils’ writing available for their own reference during the session.
