Research shows the clear correlation between a child’s receptive and expressive vocabulary at the age of 5, and later academic success. The national curriculum and current statutory assessment system for reading and writing have raised the expectations of children’s understanding and use of a wide range of increasingly precise and sophisticated vocabulary. This session will cover the research background, and recommended approaches to selecting, introducing, practising and consolidating new vocabulary through planned activities across the curriculum and incidental interactions in KS1 classrooms.
